How to Do Hard Things in a Human Way
with Rasmus Hougaard

About this event

Companies strive to create more connected and caring workplaces where people can thrive and do their best work. But every day leaders need to make decisions that impact people’s lives. They have to cancel projects, manage unpopular changes – and sometimes let people know they no longer have a job.

How do leaders do the hard things that come with the responsibility of leadership, while remaining a good person and bringing out the best in other people?

In their new book, Compassionate Leadership the Potential Project’s Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter marshal research from thousands of leaders, employees, and companies in nearly a hundred countries. They reveal that being hard and being human are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, the most successful leaders – and those most valued by their employees – have mastered the ‘wise compassion’ that balances concern for their people with the courage and candor to get hard things done.

On 1st February, Rasmus will share how we can approach our own roles with care and compassion even in the face of the pressures and stresses of daily work.

This event is for any leader trying to balance what it takes to be strong and effective with compassionate caring for their people – I hope you can join us!

Rasmus Hougaard is the founder and Managing Director of Potential Project, the global leader in customized leadership and organizational training programs based on mindfulness. Potential Project works with Fortune500 companies in thirty countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, including clients such as Accenture, Nike, American Express, Microsoft, and Sony. Hougaard has been nominated by Thinkers50 as one of the eight leading leadership thinkers in the world as well as one of the emerging business thinkers most likely to shape the future of business.

Register to confirm your place. You will receive the online link to the event in your confirmation email.

The event is free to HBR subscribers and followers. Click here to learn more about HBR and how to subscribe.

Join us for an online/virtual tour of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Van Gogh Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, plus works by many other artists including Monet, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and more. We’ll discuss how the museum’s paintings and drawings compare and contrast with well-known items at other museums and the context of these works in Vincent’s life and legacy.

Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch: [March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his death at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty.

The Van Gogh Museum is a Dutch art museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries in the Museum Square in Amsterdam South, close to the Stedelijk Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Concertgebouw. The museum opened on 2 June 1973, and its buildings were designed by Gerrit Rietveld and Kisho Kurokawa.

The museum contains the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. In 2017, the museum had 2.3 million visitors and was the most-visited museum in the Netherlands, and the 23rd-most-visited art museum in the world. In 2019, the Van Gogh Museum launched the Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience, a technology-driven “immersive exhibition” on Van Gogh’s life and works, which has toured globally.

Klimt’s “Woman In Gold” – Art and Film History Livestream.

When people see the famous portrait, they see a masterpiece by one of Austria’s finest artists. But I see a picture of my aunt, a woman who talked to me about life, while I brushed her hair in her bedroom.” (Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) from “The Woman in Gold”)

Join us for a viewing and analysis of the 2015 movie, “Woman in Gold,” a historical biopic that tells the story of Maria Altmann’s legal battle with the Austrian government to have her aunt’s Klimt portrait returned to her after it was stolen by the Nazis during the 1938 Anschluss of Austria that included the extermination of Austrian Jews and confiscation of their property.

Directed by Simon Curtis and written by Alexi Kaye Campbell, the 2015 film stars Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, and Daniel Brühl. The film also stars Gustav Klimt’s glorious “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I”.

The 109-minute film tells the story of how the 1907 Klimt painting survives the 1938 Anschluss of Austria and the Nazi Holocaust and then in 2006 emigrates to the Ronald S. Lauder Neue Gallery in New York.

The complete 90+ year story cannot be told in 109 minutes. The story of the journey is a complex one of the families involved with the glamorous Klimt painting and each other: the Bloch-Bauer Family, the Klimt Family, the Schoenberg family, and the Austrian/Viennese/Nazi family.

This event is in two parts. There will first be a viewing of the movie followed by a presentation that will focus on the details of the story that the movie did not include.

Schedule:

– View the Movie: 1:10-2:50pm EST (Washington, DC time)

– Watch the Presentation: 2:55-3:30pm ET (Washington, DC time)

You are welcome to join us for both parts. However, if you have already watched “Woman in Gold,” you can join us for just the presentation that follows the film. If you haven’t watched the film but want to watch it on your own, it is available through Amazon Prime Video where you can purchase or rent it—and then you can join us for the presentation.

MENSTRUAL ART: BREAKING THE BLOOD TABOOMENSTRUAL ART: BREAKING THE BLOOD TABOO

[ad_1]

Event description
Join LDG as we welcome back Alekszandra Rokvity for this lecture dedicated to Menstrual Art, breaking the blood taboo!

About this event

Menstruation art is provocative and confrontational. It confronts audiences with their own preconceived ideas about menstruation, social constructs and what is acceptable fare from female bodies.

This lecture led by Endometriosis and Menstruation Activist Alekszandra Rokvity, will lead you through the history of menstruation art as a feminist statement, highlighting the politicized and divisive status of femininity in our society. We will explore some examples of the most famous works throughout a variety of mediums – performance, photography, drawing, digital art – and examine the crucial messages in this citing, unusual, and undoubtedly most ‘taboo’ of mediums.

Alekszandra is a PhD candidate at the University of Graz in Austria, working in the fields of Cultural Studies and Medical Humanities. Her work is focused on endometriosis and the social discourse surrounding menstruation. As a sufferer of endometriosis since her early teens, Alekszandra has made it her mission in life to demystify the illness, educate others, inspire young researchers, and help others in any way she can! Her second passion is writing fiction: she has published a collection of shorts stories, she blogs, and is currently working on a novel – and yes, inevitably, her creations feature endo warriors!

Please read the following FAQ’s as you may find the answer you are looking for already listed below. If these do not answer your question, then please email us with the subject heading “UNRESOLVED ENQUIRY” and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

Ship Timbers in Historic BuildingsShip Timbers in Historic Buildings

[ad_1]

Event description
It is commonly said that timber-framed buildings are made from ship timbers – is there ever any truth to the old tales?

About this event

The third in the Triskele Heritage 2021-22 Winter Series of lectures.

Following on from the popular Lockdown Lectures which, ran from January to May 2021, this new series of monthly lectures by buildings archaeologist James Wright will examine commonly held myths about the mediaeval period.

A visit to almost any timber-framed structure in the land will elicit a story that the building’s timbers were re-used from a wrecked ship. The tale is often elaborated to add a layer of enigma and romanticism by mentioning the Spanish Armada or battle of Trafalgar. Are these just harmless folktales or can we genuinely find the timbers of lost ships in the rafters of ancient buildings?

The speaker, James Wright (Triskele Heritage), is an award winning buildings archaeologist. He has two decades professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens. He hopes to find meaningful truths about how ordinary and extraordinary folk lived their lives in the mediaeval period. He is the author of the popular Mediaeval Mythbusting Blog.
