A decade of conflict, creation and change – historian Professor Kate Williams brings to life the fascinating world of the 1920s.

From strikes and suffrage to innovations in science and arts and culture, the 1920s saw Britain leap forward in some areas but crumble in others.

Fuelled by an epic generational battle as the young tried to throw Edwardian values away for good, the decade stood as an incredible period of social change. For some it was one long party, for others it brought post-war suffering, and eventually The Wall Street Crash brought it all grinding to a halt. One thing we can be sure of, after the 20s, nothing was ever the same again.

About the speaker:

Kate Williams is a historian, author and broadcaster and is Professor of Modern History at Reading University. She is a specialist in modern history, royal and constitutional affairs.

What’s Online is a series of talks and events delivered by our experts and special guests. Talks last approximately 30-40 minutes, followed by a 15 minute Q&A.

Join LDG’s Luisa MacCormack as we explore the world of the inimitable Louise Bourgeois!

Known for her site specific and monolithic sculptures, her haunting installations and her skill as a sculptor, unbeknownst to many, Louise Bourgeois’ oeuvre also includes a collection of literally thousands of drawings. Made over the span of her seventy year career, Bourgeois’ drawings are perhaps the most immediate of the artists’s works – often created late at night whilst suffering from insomnia, or as a kind of creative diary, the drawings explore universal and deeply emotional themes, all through the medium of doodling.

This class will explore Louise Bourgeois’ obsession with Drawing through a series of mindful drawing exercises, working both from imagination, some of Bourgeois’ own writings, and from her oeuvre, expect a series of unusual therapeutic exercises designed to make use of drawing as a cathartic tool.

You will need

LOTS of paper, Red ink or pens, Pencils and Black ink or Pens

About the Bootcamp:

Each week will see 2 hours of live teaching by the DataStax Developers in the form of a workshop. Like any online course, there will be a number of homework assignments to complete during the course of the week. The total learning time per week including live teaching and homework tasks is approximately 3 hours.

You can decide to tackle as many or as few weeks as you want. There is no penalty for not completing the homework tasks, however we highly recommend that you do in order to prepare for the certification exam and to claim your voucher to sit the exam for FREE!

Each week is standalone, meaning you can come and go as you please.

Build microservices on Apache Cassandra™ with APIs (Rest and GraphQL)

If you attended our previous sessions, you will now have coded the majority of your project on top of Cassandra! In this final session, you will leave with your own full-stack application ready to go.

We will learn how to expose and publish our treatments through efficient and secure APIs using technologies like Rest, GraphQL and more. As before, multiple languages and related frameworks will be used (Spring, Django, Express, Apollo). Stay with us to have the front-end interacting with your very own backend microservice!

After our first iteration with over 800 registrants and 36 hours of hacking, StarHacks is proud to host our second hackathon, StarHacks II, on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23, 2022 with beginner-focused pre-event workshops on Saturday, January 8; Sunday, January 9; Saturday, January 15; Sunday, January 16.

StarHacks is a free, beginner-focused, all-inclusive all-female and nonbinary high school and collegiate global and virtual hackathon, here to break the mold of what a person in tech looks like one hackathon at a time.

For our second year, we are #BuildingBridges: bridging divides, venturing into uncharted territory, finding unity as we pioneer into new frontier. Through code and community, our core mission is to create an environment for the world’s brightest thinkers to empower and be empowered, building the bridge to a more inclusive future — and we would love for you to be a part of it.

💫 Who can participate?

Those who identify as women, non-binary, or any other gender minority, that are in middle school, high school, university, or recently graduated.

💫 Do I need to know how to code?

Nope! In fact, over 30% of our hackers in StarHacks I never coded before! Attend our prehackathon to learn some basic coding skills. Learn more at starhacks.tech

All you need is a working device, internet connection, and some yummy snacks!

💫 Do I need a team?

You are welcome to solo hack, but if you’re looking for a team, StarHacks II will have many opportunities for team formation where you will be put in a team with other excited hackers!

The Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona hosts a series of monthly presentations on the science of climate change and landscape architecture solutions.

Join the event during your lunch break. It starts at 12pm and ends at 1pm on the first Friday of each month, between October 2021 and June 2022 (except April 2022, which will be on the second Friday of that month).

The UNITE initiative was established to identify and address structural racism within the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported community and the greater scientific community.

NIH’s initiative aims to establish an equitable and civil culture within the biomedical research enterprise and reduce barriers to racial and ethnic equity in the biomedical research workforce.

WHAT: The listening sessions are part of UNITE’s efforts to listen and learn. Key stakeholders at all levels of the biomedical research community who work and serve in diverse settings and hold various roles, and who partner and collaborate with research teams have important experiences and insights to share.

The insights that you share will provide valuable information on the full range of issues and challenges facing diverse talent within the scientific and administrative workforce and will help develop priorities and an action plan.
